The tomb of Neferrenpet TT 43 has a small inverted T-shaped chapel with a broad hall measuring 4. The rough-hewn inner hall measures roughly 3. The other walls in the broad hall were finished with a fine layer of gypsum plaster but were never painted.
Sections of the chapel decoration were recorded by Marcel Baud in , followed by Norman de Garis Davies in , and Wolfgang Helck in Helck a. IV, 2. The title indicates that he supervised the royal magazines where specific provisions were kept, and oversaw a number of processing installations. Title of Neferrenpet in TT Photo: M. Drawing: After Helck , fig. Neferrenpet would have controlled access in and out of the magazines as well as any areas that processed food for the court Helck a, Moving on to the painted decoration within the chapel, a man—presumably the tomb owner Neferrenpet—offers a composite bouquet to two kings seated within a kiosk Fig.
Much of the upper half of the unidentified ruler is destroyed. His lower torso is preserved sitting on a folding chair, with a white cushion and an animal pelt indicated in yellow. Drawing: P. Sketch of a king and a prince?
Drawing after Davies , fig. Dynasty18 kiosk scenes depict the king seated on a block throne or a lion throne, but not a folding chair. In her publication on chairs from the tomb of Tutankhamun, Marianne Eaton-Krauss examined the New Kingdom use of the folding chair in art and concluded that it was not a throne but a domestic royal seat that appears in festive scenes Eaton-Krauss , 90— The sketch shows a king wearing the blue crown seated on a lion throne, while to the front another figure, possibly wearing a crown, sits on a folding chair drawing a bow Fig.
The two figures are connected by a register line. Although the scene is recreational in nature, the juxtaposition of the lion throne and the folding chair seems to relate to status, with the senior king on the throne overseeing a junior royal on the folding chair. The tomb chapel of Neferrenpet contains one of the only depictions of rulers seated side-by-side under a kiosk in elite 18th Dynasty Theban tombs Table 1.

Doyle by J. H 19 verso in: Radwan , As for non-kiosk scenes, TT 42 contains a painted yellow stela with two kings seated back-to-back. Norman de Garis Davies read the cartouche above the left figure as Menkheperre Thutmose III ; the cartouche above the figure to the right is blank Davies , The figure to the right is probably Amenhotep II based on the fact that his cartouche is juxtaposed with the cartouche of Thutmose III in TT 42 on the lintel over the door to the shrine in the tomb chapel Davies , pl.
Courtesy of Betsy M. IV, , 14; Manuelian , 24, no. A unique example appears in TT 64, which was designed for Hekareshu and Hekerneheh. From these contemporaneous examples, it is clear that the senior ruler sits behind the junior ruler when they are seated side by side. Based on examples drawn from contemporaneous Theban tombs, we can identify the anonymous king in TT 43 as Thutmose IV, who is seated on a folding stool in front of his enthroned father, Amenhotep II.
Turning to the right focal wall of the tomb chapel BHFR , another anonymous king is rendered in a kiosk, seated on a block throne Fig. Before him, a man who is probably Neferrenpet offers papyrus and lotus flower bouquets with hanging fowl. Rogers Fund, a long tunic. In his hands, he holds an ankh and a heqa-scepter. The brow band crosses the forehead, narrows to a thin half circle before the ear and widens at the back of the crown.
In the 18th Dynasty, two types of shebyu-collars appear in two-dimensional art: collars with raised lentiform beads, and collars with beads that lie flat against the shoulders Brand , During this period, scenes show simple kiosks supported by two columns, and include images of the tomb owner presenting bouquets and offerings to the king e.
TT Beinlich-Seeber and Shedid , pl. By the reign of Amenhotep III, royal kiosk scenes become very complicated, with double and triple canopy arrangements TT Davies , pl.
In his publication, Abdel Ghaffar Shedid pointed out that the figural proportions, arrangements and details in TT 43 were similar to those in the tombs of Nakht TT 52 and Nebseny TT , both of which he dates by style to the reign of Thutmose IV Shedid , 93—94, pl.
Based on the above discussion, the weight of the evidence points to the identity of the king on the right focal wall as Thutmose IV. This can be explained simply. Thutmose IV only reigned 8 years Bryan Kaper, and H. Baillie, M.
