Cryptographic service, 3. Windows Update. DO NOT remove the directory just the files in them. Go back to your services and restart the 3 services you had stopped. Finally try to do the update from windows update. I know this is the long way first, but it also fixes a lot of problems on the way. Finally if that method does not work go online and find the file in their download section. Just look up the KB????? It seems like this wouldn't be any different, but it was the final answer in my case.

I fully believe that the other steps were also important in my success. Just spent a lot of time trying to get sp1 to install stand alone file , followed your hints to the letter , and it did not work for me.

But now windows update does not show sp1 as being available for download So l have no idea now. Tried your instructions, didn't work, same error when either using windows update, or manually downloaded sp1 installer.

I've finally managed to bypass the error. After trying the above steps thanks to Clem Cadidle I've only retried the manually downloaded installer, which failed, but later I also tried windows update again, and there was another update which showed up. I've installed that, and then SP1 update showed up again, and this time it went fine. I ran checkSUR as per that update and thought it would sort everything but it didn't it just produced a log file as per -. This is not expected, but not catastrophic.

Information gathering. So it has detected a bunch of keys missing, but says this is not catastrophic When I checked this area of the registry I have all the keys but they are vs 6. This is what I did to get Vista SP1 to install I even tried a inplace upgrade and it still found an error and restored Vista back to the where I started from.

I then did an inplace upgrade and beleave it or not it worked. So then I let the MS upgrade do it thing I think it had to download and upgrade 47 upgades. About an hour and a half later I installed the stand alone service pack 1 upgrade and it worked. Maybe all I would need to have done is the normal upgrade I don't know.

Now a little info about the mouse and keyboard I removed. The mouse was a USB Microsoft wireless optical mouse blue. When I first installed Vista the screen savor didn't work. I read on-line that if you use the adapter PS2 to USB every thing would work and it did. I don't know which, keyboard or mouse, caused the problem. I think I tried about everything except for removing hardware with software one component at a time until I found the problem.

I removed the easyest ones first, keyboard and mouse and got lucky. It worked!!! I had some success with this, as it released some 'stuck' updates when nothing else was working. Thank you very much for posting these steps.

I am working with a guinea pig, a laptop that started with Vista home that was upgraded to Vista Business and put on our domain, trying to work out all of the bugs and issues. Before the steps outlined above, I had failed updates from my server SBS R2 , and from the website, that refused to install as stand-alones. Now according to my server, I am up to date with my Vista laptop, however according to the website I am still failing on roughly 19 updates error code: Yes, I made sure that the server has any pending updates approved, prior to today.

Thoughts please? Do I need or want these other updates, or will these be released through the server updates sooner or later? I too have error and, having been in youch with Microsoft "Technical support" Who seem to know less about the error than the guinea pig, am still none the wiser. MS tech support seem to be trying the same thing over and over again but, unfortunately my dementia isn't so far advanced that I havent realised this.

Now getting frustrated I'm thinking of setting up a tech support helpline consisting of prerecorded messages and wondered if it would like gainful employment?

Make sure you have update KB installed. I had the same issues getting SP1 to work until I checked through all my updates and noticed I missed this one somehow.

SP1 went in fine right after installing this update. Archived Forums. Sign in to vote. I'm pulling my hair out I'm new to this forum so I hope the efforts worth it.

Version 6. Checking package watchlist. Checking component watchlist. Checking packages. On a possible Red Herrin. I have an update hidden relating to Windows mail junk filter update March as this keeps failing install, as I don't use windows mail MS Outlook user I havn't bothered about it.
