These are just a few of the many video games that pioneered new genres and technology, laid the foundation for modern-day gaming, and spawned iconic franchises that are still successful today. And as a bonus: You can play all of these retro games online for free right within your web browser.
In , Oregon Trail was created by several young student teachers as a way to get their students interested in the 19th-century pioneer journey out west. It was an early strategic game that introduced the concepts of resource management and risk management to players. In the early s, it was released as a stand-alone game to the public on the Apple-II, making its way into schools everywhere and becoming a pioneer of the edutainment genre.
But soon it began appearing in pubs, bowling alleys, and JC Penney stores. In fact, people even lined up outside bars in the morning to play it. In , programmer Will Crowther created a text-only, interactive game called Colossal Cave Adventure , where players entered text commands to explore a virtual cave and solve puzzles. He spawned an entirely new gaming genre called interactive fiction, hypertext, or interactive storytelling, which laid the foundation for future adventure games and role-playing games.
Space Invaders , an arcade game about shooting aliens, became immensely popular all around the world in Urban legend says it caused a national shortage of yen coins in Japan. With its blocky, iconic aliens, it visually defined the look of commercial video games. It was the first game that introduced a difficulty curve—it got more challenging as you played. As you blasted away aliens, fewer aliens on the screen meant a lighter load on the processor and, in turn, faster rendering.
The aliens sped up, as did the 4-note soundtrack. The guy was yelling very intensely, but it sounded like those old TV shows in which someone is talking on the phone and you can hear the person on the other line but the speech is garbled. Kinda reminds me of this game: A game where people transform into animals and beat the shit out of each other. The memories are fond. I had almost forgotten about this great juvenile platformer.

Hopscotch was a clear favourite back in the day and was a more laid back game as compared to the more active, running ones. Simply toss a beanbag or any small object into each box and hop on over to the box to pick it up while maintaining your overall balance on one leg.
Using a large bunch of rubber bands that have been joined together into a long chain, players have to jump over the rubber band rope.
Think of Zero Point as an adaptation of limbo, with the modification of having to go under, rather than over. With each successful jump, the difficulty is raised as the rope is raised higher until players are unable to cross it. Photo credit: capn madd matt via VisualHunt. Throw it as hard as you can at your opponents to eliminate them.
Be warned though, bruises and tennis ball dirt marks are common and act as post-game badges of honour. This portion follows conventional rules of Rock beating Scissors, Paper beating Rock and Scissors beating Paper and the winner of this section gets the first turn advantage.
