You are armed with a sword and shield to attack and defend. You move from floor to floor, which are constructed as mazes, searching for the key; this key will unlock the stage exit. Items can be found by killing all enemies. From Mobygames. Original Entry. Uploaded by Jason Scott on September 19, A anime series, beginning with The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk, uses the game as its back story, though is set many decades later.

The player assumes the role of the hero Gilgamesh, whose goal is to rescue the maiden Ki from the demon Druaga. To do this, he must traverse through 60 floors of an immense tower. Gilgamesh comes equipped with a sword, which he can use to defeat monsters, and a shield, which can be used to block magical attacks. The monsters get progressively more difficult as the game progresses, beginning with simple slimes and culminating with Druaga himself.

Each floor consists of a maze filled with monsters, and a randomly placed locked door leading to the next level. The player must navigate through the maze to find a randomly placed key that unlocks the door. In addition, each floor contains a hidden treasure, which appears once the player has performed a specific requirement.

The player's starting position is also randomly determined; however, the hidden treasure always appears in the same position the player starts from when revealed.

The mazes themselves are not random, but there are various predetermined patterns. Some of the treasures are merely helpful items, some are detrimental, and some are essential to completing the game including the Blue Crystal Rod, the game's most important item; without it, Druaga will not appear and the player will be forced to return to an earlier floor, known as 'zapping'.

The regular enemies are slimes, magicians, ghosts, knights, lizard men, ropers which look like huge blobs with tentacles , and dragons the main being Quox. In the third Namco Museum game, there is a small handbook explaining how to get the treasures. There is also a hidden version far more difficult than the regular named 'Another Tower' and an extra version named 'Darkess Tower'.

The treasures save the first one are all alternated in how to get. In the museum's library, there are three books containing illustrations of the game's characters.

In , the game was remade for the PC Engine which saw numerous changes detailed below. In , the Famicom release was repackaged and distributed in Japan as a pre-order bonus for Baten Kaitos. The game also debuted the Slime monsters which would later become the mascot of the Dragon Quest series. The anime takes place 60 years after the events of the game.

A noteworthy element of the anime is the music, composed by famed video game composer Hitoshi Sakimoto. Inspired by ancient Babylonian mythology, specifically the Epic of Gilgamesh and Tower of Babel , the game follows a knight named Gilgamesh as he climbs an enormous tower and fights the eponymous Druaga, while rescuing Princess Ki.

Gameplay in Tower of Druaga takes place across 60 floors. Each stage has a timer and requires the player to traverse the maze on each floor and obtain a key and head for the exit, while fighting enemies and obtaining items.

If the player loses all their lives, they will be sent back to the first floor. Additional credits do not let the player continue the game. Almost every floor in the game contains an item which can be obtained after meeting certain criteria, such as defeating enemies or reaching a certain area on the maze. Most items are absolutely crucial in continuing the game and some are necessary to obtain items later in the game. Items include things such as Pickaxes which can destroy walls, Jet Boots which increase the players movement speed, Necklaces or Rings which protect the player from certain enemies and of course more powerful swords.

All items are passive, with the only item that could be destroyed being the Pickaxe. They break if the player uses them more than a certain amount of times per level, or by striking an outside wall.

They can be upgraded throughout the game and the Gold Pickaxe can be used an unlimited amount of times, but can still be destroyed when using on an outside wall. The acquisition of certain items can be extremely vague and guides exist on the internet which detail how to obtain each item. Enemies in the are basic at the beginning of the game, but progressively become tougher as they change color, either gaining new abilities or more health.

Most enemies will fire projectiles of sorts and in order to block them, the player must be facing the direction of the projective with his sword unsheathed.
